Christian Social Action Committee

ADDITIONS/UPDATES ARE IN RED

Statement from Rev. Dolberry

Chair of BCAMEC Christian Social Action Committee

The United States of America is a nation founded on democracy. The word democracy comes from the Greek words demos and kratos. Demos means people and kratos means power. Therefore, our

country was founded on people power. We, the people with the power, decide who runs this country, our states, cities, townships, school boards, library boards and so on. We the people decide the laws that govern this nation and everyone in it.

In order for we, the people to make decisions, to exercise our power, we must VOTE. Voting is central to democracy! As a matter of fact, voting is to democracy what what fairness is to justice, what Jesus is to eternal life. You can’t have one without the other.  You can’t have the latter without the former.

In these perilous times, it's not enough to just say vote!! We have to be clear and very clear. We the people have to be specific in our instructions this political season. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist. It’s very simple. There are two forms of government on the November 5th ballot. Democracy or people power and  Autocracy, where the power is in the hands of one person. Let me break it down a step further. It’s either we or he.  That’s it. that’s all!!

There are many nominees for offices across this nation, including Michigan, who favor autocracy.  If elected, they will overrule the people’s choice and declare the loser the winner. January 6th 2021 was just a dress rehearsal. It was nothing compared to what could happen if we lose our democracy. Roe V Wade was just the beginning of overturning the law of the land.  It will get worse.

Please vote for those who uphold the virtues of democracy, justice, righteousness, peace, love & compassion for the least of these. Please vote for those who have a heart to build instead of tearing down. Of course, please pray that democracy and the rule of law will be the winner in all elections. And when you get up off your knees, consider being an advocate for democracy by volunteering during the 2024 primary and general election.

Let’s choose to build a stronger democracy, stronger community, a stronger state and a stronger country, together, to the glory and honor of our God! In that vein, we will collaborate with our sister church, Bethel Ann Arbor, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and community organizations who have a mind to build.

EARLY VOTING AVAILABLE TO ALL WASHTENAW COUNTY VOTERS

Begins Saturday February 17, 2024

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – All Washtenaw County voters have the option to vote early in-person prior to every major election, starting with the February 27, 2024 Presidential Primary. Early Voting sites will be open for 8 hours each day starting Saturday, February 17 and through Sunday, February 25, 2024, including on the weekends. These sites will also be open for early voting during all other state and federal elections to be held this year.

Voters must visit one of the Early Voting sites assigned to them. Postcards were recently mailed to all voters in Washtenaw County informing them of their Early Voting site locations and hours of availability.

Washtenaw County-Coordinated Early Voting Sites

23 of 27 cities and townships are participating in the Washtenaw County-Coordinated Early Voting Plan, administered by the Washtenaw County Clerk’s office.

Voters in these jurisdictions have two early voting sites to choose from: a Regional site assigned only to certain cities/townships and a County Central site, open to all voters in the 23 participating cities/townships.

All County-Coordinated Early Voting sites will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm during each day of early voting.

The Washtenaw County Clerk’s office offered all jurisdictions in the county the opportunity to join the County-Coordinated plan. The county’s goals in developing this plan were to provide support to city/township clerks, increase efficiencies, and reduce the overall costs to administer early voting in the long-term.

County Clerk Lawrence Kestenbaum expressed deep appreciation for the cooperation of local units in developing a coordinated plan for early voting in Washtenaw County.

He added: “Michigan elections require the active involvement of state, county, city, and township officials. Adding early voting to this decentralized system is a big and complicated job. The implementing legislation gave each area the flexibility to determine the right approach for its citizens and its unique geography. Our early voting plan takes advantage of those opportunities.”

Washtenaw County-Coordinated Early Voting Sites:

  1. Region 1 - Sylvan Township Hall serving voters in the City of Chelsea, City of Manchester, Dexter Township, Freedom Township, Manchester Township, Lima Township, Lyndon Township, Sharon Township, and Sylvan Township.

  2. Region 2 - Scio Township Hall serving voters in the City of Dexter, Ann Arbor Township, Northfield Township, Scio Township, and Webster Township.

  3. Region 3 - Ypsilanti Freighthouse serving voters in the City of Ypsilanti, Augusta Township, Salem Township, and Charter Township of Superior.

  4. Region 4 - Pittsfield Township Administration Building serving voters in the City of Saline, Lodi Township, Saline Township, Pittsfield Township, and York Township.

  5. Central Site - Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center serving voters in all 23 jurisdictions listed above.

About Early Voting

Early voting is an option afforded to voters after the adoption of State Proposal 22-2 during the November 8, 2022 General Election, a constitutional amendment that guarantees new and expanded voting rights. This constitutional amendment also allows Michigan voters the right to request an absent voter ballot for all future elections with a one-time application, pre-paid postage for absent voter return mail, a state-managed absent voter ballot tracking system, and additional absent voter ballot drop boxes, among other changes.

For more information visit Washtenaw.org/EarlyVoting, or Michigan.gov/Vote.
